wedding chair

i can’t believe I carried this from London….london taxi to eurostar, eurostar to paris gare du nord, car to charles de gaulle airport, paris to dubai, dubai to bangkok, bankok to sydney customs agents, sydney to byron… i had to keep draping an airline blanket over my legs so nobody could see it was not under the chair in front of me.
this is a beautiful and unique turn-of-the-century French wedding display stand or globe de mariee. they were used to display the bride and groom’s wedding rings…and sometimes, crowns. the piece has silk  flowers, metal birds, and mirrors, sweeping up the back from the cushion. the wire legs are stapled to a wood platform, the piece does not have a glass dome.

Symbology behind the wedding dome
Oak Leaves = Longevity of Union
Sheaves of Wheat = The gift of Life
Rectangular Mirrors = Years of Engagement
Diamond Shaped Mirrors = Fertility
Large Central Mirror = Reflection of the Soul
Clusters of Grapes = Prosperity
Roses or Daisies = Love
Cherries = Protection from Bad Fortune
Ivy = Attachment to each other
Chestnut Tree Leaves = Links to Others
